Selfless Support

Last Friday I attended University of New England’s School of Pharmacy Class of 2025’s White Coat Ceremony where my brother received his white coat and was officially inducted into the School of Pharmacy after completing his pre-pharmacy program. I am beyond proud of him, and so excited to see where his schooling and career takes him. He has found his passion!

Travis Frost, UNE ’19, Doctor of Pharmacy was the keynote speaker that evening. He mentioned that during his time as a pharmacy student, a close friend of his passed away in a car accident. He quickly lost focus in his studies, and spent his weekends traveling back home to visit his friend’s family and help clean out his apartment.

What he is forever grateful for are the friendships he had with his fellow classmates. They were willing to support, help, and be there for him in any way that he needed. Frost mentioned, “Willingness to help others in need is essential because when you need it – and you will – personally or academically, you will be very appreciative for the help you receive.”

The selfless support of his classmates has carried such an impact even to present day. It is so important to check on your friends. They could be silently battling internal thoughts, feelings, and struggles, but will put on a brave face. I treasure and do not take any of my friendships for granted because maintaining quality relationships is much needed. You have the power to maintain a strong support system in your life. However, relationships are a two-way street, so you must in return, give the same supportive energy that you are willing to receive.

Frost was able to bounce back and carry on with his studies due to the immense support of his classmates due to the selfless act of support and friendship they provided him with. A small act of kindness can move mountains. Lead by example and strive to open yourself up to be a true support system in the lives of those around you.
