Explorin' New Orleans
New Orleans, Louisiana is my new favorite city and here's why!
My parents got engaged in New Orleans, and I got invited to my friend Erin's Bachelorette party there, which made me that much more excited to visit this city because it has an underlying theme of love!
It was a trip filled with new friends, old friends, and so many wonderful memories created! New Orleans has such a diverse and rooted culture and background. I immersed myself into all areas of the culture from music being played everywhere you turn to scrumptious food to historical architecture and history to spooky tours. Pictured below is our group minus Erin's future sister-in-law Kaite, who arrived later in the trip. We were also missing Becca and Chrissy from the wedding party on the trip. From left to right it is Melissa, Erin, Jess (me), Carly, and Ryan.
My favorite highlights of the trip include:
Eating beignets at Café du Monde (open since 1862)
Watching a second line wedding procession (this is where musicians will play as the bride and groom lead a procession down the street dancing and holding umbrellas with their wedding party behind them who all wave white handkerchiefs celebrating the new beginning of the couple's marriage)
Playing a game of outdoor Jenga, which drew a large crowd in to cheer us on as we played the longest, tallest, and wobbliest game of it
Eating all the southern staples such as gumbo (each restaurant does their own spin on it), beignets, calas, boudin, jambalaya, chargrilled oysters, fried alligator, crawfish etouffee (my favorite dish), shrimp po'boys, etc.
Drinking a Pat O'Brien's Hurricane
Going on a food tour (delicious) and a ghost tour where I learned all about the spooky history of the city, which is still present all around the city, especially in Jackson Square and the French Quarter
Almost passing out trying to quickly blow up balloons in our room to secretly decorate for Erin's Mardi Gras themed Bachelorette party
Getting dressed up for dinner at Jack Rose and a night cap on the roof top at Hot Tin
Closing down The Spotted Cat bar where we grooved the night away to some phenomenal live jazz music
Watching a street poet create a poem on the spot on a typewriter for Erin
Meeting the kindest hospitable hosts, tour guides, and strangers
The trip was filled with endless laughs, minimal sleep, sore feet, good eats, and incredible company with the best group of people celebrating Erin! This is your sign to book a getaway, whether it is a day trip, overnight, long weekend, or a week + long stay somewhere. Put NOLA on your list of next places to visit. I cannot wait to go back!
Remember to stay humble and kind, always!
